Festival
play report by Nettie Powell.
The
PVADS Youth Theatre again triumphed in the Harold Joliffe One Act
Play festival this weekend for their performance of I Remember….Pewsey
at War, a play written and directed by Nettie Powell originally performed
in Pewsey last October.
The 14 cast members gave an energetic performance in front of a large audience – despite a last minute near cancellation of the Youth entries by the festival organizer! The adjudicator was extremely impressed with the acting abilities of the cast, particularly Ben Bateman for his role as the headmaster, Poppy Bunce as Mrs Blackman, Claire Gent for a mature performance as Miss Chillingsworth and Kate Powell as Mags Pearce. He also singled out Cherry Mawby for her wonderful unaccompanied solo, and Michael Rice for his rich voice and projection. His praise particularly focused on the strong teamwork within the cast and the real drama that came out of what could have been purely an educational exercise. So well done team!! My special thanks go to all of the cast, who despite one or two hiccups of both physical and technical nature (illness and props) gave such a mature, unflustered professional performance. We were consequently awarded - The Brenda Lilley Loving Cup for the Best Performance by a Youth Group. Disappointingly there wasn’t the competition between youth plays that we had hoped – however it is reassuring to know that the play actually scored 73/100 points to place us third overall in the competition – with the 2 winning adult plays (76 and 79) both going on to the next round of the adult competition. The Youth play will now go on to the Five Counties Finals (which we won last year with Fall of the House of Usher) on 25th April in Gloucestershire. But that wasn’t the end of our excitement:- Unusually in this festival there were 4 original plays, ie written by unpublished authors from the societies taking part. And against stiff competition Nettie Powell also won a trophy for:- The Swindon Advertiser Award for an Original Production Finally – to round off an impressive festival with several new groups and some very experienced festival entrants performing 9 plays ranging from farce to dramatic improvised theatre - one of the most coveted awards, The Peter English Award for Best Direction, was given to Nettie Powell!!! I have to say that this award belongs to the whole team – the play evolved organically during rehearsals and there were so many innovative ideas from the cast and crew that were incorporated into the script. It was the children’s delivery of some very clever and emotive theatrical moments that made the whole performance such a success. Thank you to everyone, from my technical team to the parents of the young actors, for putting such time and dedication into this production. We should all be very proud of ourselves. Well done! |

PVADS Youth Theatre are putting on an original piece of theatre on October 23rd to 25th as part of a three play evening at the Bouverie Hall, Pewsey. Entitled ‘I Remember…’ – this play is being devised and written by Nettie Powell and youth theatre members. The play will be based on real life stories of local residents during WW2 in the Pewsey Vale villages. The youth members are currently interviewing several stalwarts of the community, researching data at the Heritage Museum in Pewsey and talking to local historians. We would welcome any other anecdotes that people have regarding their experiences of the war in this area or if anyone has photos of people and places from that time to include in a multimedia backdrop for the play. We are particularly interested in life as a ‘youth’ during this period from school days, scouting and guiding, evacuees, food rations and family life. Anything from funny stories to heroic incidents will be considered. We hope to begin rehearsals after the end of August and the play will develop through workshops exploring the material collated over the coming weeks. If you are aged between 10 and 17 and would like to be involved please call Nettie Powell on 07977 561958 |

Vale Youth Theatre triumph in the Five Counties Youth Drama Finals
The cast and crew of PVADS Youth Theatre production of 'Fall of the House of Usher' by Edgar Allen Poe are celebrating their win in the finals of the Youth Drama Competition on Saturday. It was the turn of Wiltshire to host the finals this year and thanks must go to all who helped make the Bouverie Hall in Pewsey a very successful venue for this event. The cast of eleven, all aged between 10 and 16, have been working on this play since it was first performed as part of a PVADS show last October, before going on to win both Best Youth play and best Dramatic Endeavour award at the Harold Joliffe One Act Play Festival in Swindon in February. year old Cherry Mawby set to steal the show! Bring your hankies to this weeks’ production by the Youth Section of Pewsey Vale Amateur Dramatics society of ‘Our Day Out’ by Willy Russell (author of Blood Brothers) on Thursday 26th- Saturday 28th October at 7.30 in the Bouverie Hall, Pewsey. Cherry Mawby, aged 10, has a lead role in this challenging musical – playing a child desperate to escape her life of poverty and abuse – she takes this wish to the extremes. Director Nettie Powell has again chosen a play with a social conscience that makes you laugh and makes you cry. She has managed to create an amazing performance of contrasting emotions, all from talented local youngsters in Pewsey Vale. Whilst engrossed in the story and action on stage we forget that the majority of the actors are children ranging from 10 to 16, with the exceptions of Darren Little, Steve Clements and some cameo character roles from Martin Clifton and Nettie, our very own director. Tickets on sale now from Bouverie Hall Box Office (10-12) or tel. 07977561958. |

Notice
- 'Our Day Out' Calling all talented youths (10+)!!! Auditions for this funny and emotional musical play will be held in the Bouverie Hall at 2.30pm on Sunday 2nd July 2006. There are 10 principal roles and up to 25 chorus parts in Mrs Kay's progress class. The action takes place on a school trip from inner city Liverpool to Conway Castle with stops at a café, a zoo, a fair and the beach on the way. The kids get up to all manner of mischief much to the annoyance of strict Mr Briggs. The musical numbers are simple and I've already booked a 'speech coach' to help us with our Liverpudlian accents!! Rehearsals will be on most Sunday afternoons from July with pm rehearsals 21st - 23rd, 29th & 30th Aug and you must be able to attend each day during October half term. Auditions will involve some script reading and singing and a workshop style improvisation. Principals will be asked to sing a solo piece. |
